Microfibre Towel Care: How To Use, Wash & Store Your Towels

The Ultimate Guide to Microfibre Towel Care

Learn how to properly wash, dry and organise your microfibre towels to protect your vehicle's surfaces and extend towel lifespan.

Follow these essential rules from detailers to prevent cross-contamination and keep your microfibre towels performing their best for longer.

1. Wash New Towels Before First Use

It can be tempting to reach straight for a fresh, plush microfibre towel straight out of the packet, but running them through a wash cycle first is crucial.

Washing new towels before their initial use flushes out any remaining lint and removes residues left over from the production and packaging process. This guarantees a clean, lint-free surface right from the start.

Golden Rule: Always Wash Before First Use

Skipping the first wash can leave tiny factory residues on your paint, potentially causing subtle marring or streaks. A quick pre-wash ensures 100% pure performance.

2. Separate Your Towels by Function

Never mix your microfibre towels together. Different detailing tasks demand different towel types and keeping them separated stops harsh dirt particles from finding their way onto delicate paintwork.

Store your towels in separate designated spaces or dedicated storage tubs based on their job:

Paint & Drying

Any towels reserved strictly for paintwork and drying cycles.

Glass & Interior

Short-pile or weave towels tailored for streak-free glass clarity and interior wiping.

Dirty Jobs

Dedicated towels for wheels, engine bays, exhaust tips and heavy grime.

3. Prevent Cross-Contamination During Use

Cross-contamination doesn't just happen during storage - it starts while you work. As you use your towels throughout a detail, keep them sorted immediately so you don't accidentally wash a dirty, all-purpose towel alongside a plush drying towel.

Some examples of separation include:

1 Keep Dirty Towels Together

For example, isolate wheel and engine bay towels in their own pile.

2 Keep Wet Drying Towels Separate

Collect damp drying towels together so they can be washed and tumble-dried cleanly.

3 Isolate Interior & Glass

Keep lightly soiled interior and glass towels away from grease or wax residues.

4. Special Care for Ceramic Coating & Sealant Towels

Ceramic coatings and SiO2 sealants harden as they cure. If coating residues dry inside the fibres of your microfibre towel, those fibres solidify into glass-like structures, rendering the towel abrasive and completely unusable on paint.

To safely save and reuse these towels, adopt a pre-soak routine while you detail:

Process Action Benefit
1. Setup Bucket Keep a clean bucket filled with water and diluted P&S Rags to Riches beside you. Prevents coating residues from hardening in the fibres.
2. Pre-Soak Towels Drop towel directly into the bucket the instant it is fully used. Emulsifies and breaks down ceramic residues.
3. Soak & Machine Wash Allow to soak for a few hours, then machine wash together. No need to throw away expensive towels.
4. Demote & Reuse Re-use or demote coating towels to interior or dirty tasks. Extends towel lifespan while protecting paintwork.

5. Washing & Drying Machine Rules

Microfibre is made from two types of soft plastic (polyester and polyamide). High heat and harsh cycles can melt or damage these delicate microscopic hooks, permanently ruining their softness and absorbency.

Wash Temp

Wash in your machine at 30°C to protect plastic fibres from melting.

Spin Speed

Set spin speed to a maximum of ~800 RPM (varies by machine).

Tumble Dry Settings

Use the lowest heat, ideally on a Synthetics setting.

Note on drying: Tumble drying yields the softest, fluffiest results. If heavy towels (such as twist-loop drying towels) are still slightly damp to the touch after a gentle dryer cycle, finish them off by air-drying on a clothes rack.

6. Choosing the Right Detergent

Not all detergents are suitable for microfibre. Using the wrong formula, or adding fabric softener, can leave behind clogging residues, destroy absorbency or leave gritty particles embedded in the fabric.

Detergent Use Case Verdict
P&S Rags to Riches Industry standard. Essential for removing ceramic coatings, waxes and deep residues. ✅ Ideal
ValetPro Microfibre Reviver Great alternative when not dealing with heavy ceramic coatings. ✅ Ideal
Standard Liquid Non-Bio Suitable for light maintenance washing of your microfibre towels. 👍🏼 Fine
Powdered Detergent NEVER USE. Powder granules fail to dissolve fully and get trapped inside fibres. ❌ Avoid

Microfibre Towel Care Frequently Asked Questions

Washing new towels removes excess lint and manufacturing residues leftover from production, ensuring they won't lint or leave residues on your paint or glass during first use.

No. Never use powdered detergent. Undissolved detergent granules can get trapped inside the microscopic fibres, which will scratch paintwork and reduce towel absorbency.

Pre-soak coating towels immediately after use, in a clean bucket, filled with water and P&S Rags to Riches. After a few hours of soaking, machine wash them. You can then demote these towels to interior or dirty jobs if required - Rags to Riches does a superb job at fully reviving towels used for levelling and buffing coatings.

Wash at 30°C with a maximum spin speed of around 800 RPM. Always use a liquid, non-bio detergent or dedicated microfibre wash detergent.

Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting (synthetics mode) to keep towels soft and fluffy. If heavy plush or twist-loop towels remain slightly damp, finish drying them on a clothes rack.

P&S Rags to Riches is the industry standard detergent designed specifically to dissolve hydrophobic ceramic coating residues, waxes and sealants from deep within microfibre weaves.
